The Nagi Gumba trail, nestled within the serene beauty of Shivapuri National Park, the Buddhist monastery on the top hill, offers a unique blend of spirituality, natural splendor, and adventure. It was a moderately easy hike walking through the trails and enjoying the wilderness but one filled with stories and memories that will last a lifetime.

The Nagi Gumba trail begins at Jagdol, resonating with the chants from the Stupa, and leads hikers through Tarebhir towards the lush, fauna-rich path to Nagi Gumba. Progressing to Syano Bharyang, the trail offers expansive, breathtaking views before culminating at Thulo Bharyang, where the journey’s physical and spiritual ascent reaches its pinnacle.

Embarking on this trail, hikers often find themselves captivated by the panoramic vistas and the sense of unity fostered among fellow adventurers. As for us, it was a day of discovery, filled with awe-inspiring scenery, unforeseen developments, and the warm bond of camaraderie that only such a journey can inspire.

Setting Off: The Trial Unfolds

On a chilly Saturday morning in Kathmandu, our group gathered near the starting point, Jagdol. The aroma of warm milk tea enveloped us as we fueled ourselves for the journey ahead. With laced shoes and smiles, we set out at 10 AM, joking that it was “8 AM somewhere around the globe,” as we had initially planned to move out by 8 AM.

The initial ascent was steep, posing a challenge to even more seasoned hikers in our group. But as we persevered, the trail leveled out, revealing lush greenery and towering pine trees. After two hours of walking, we reached Tare Bhir, a popular picnic spot. Despite the blaring music from nearby restaurants, the panoramic view rejuvenated us.

Our destination, however, remained distant. Gathering our members, we embarked on an adventurous shortcut along a narrow trail. We encountered fellow hikers, exchanging stories along the way. Lunchtime brought joy — a hearty meal and an unexpected treat: ice cream from a cheerful old man.

Likewise, our commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the trail extended beyond our excitement. So, we diligently collected all the plastic and trash from lunch, leaving no trace behind.

Nagi Gumba: A Hidden Gem

After 45 minutes, we arrived at Nagi Gumba, a stunning Buddhist monastery. Its beauty surpassed any photograph — the meticulously maintained garden, the tranquility of prayer flags fluttering in the breeze.

It was a place of serenity and wonder. We explored the temple’s interior, where ancient artifacts and centuries-old murals whispered tales of devotion and enlightenment. The resident monks welcomed us with warm smiles, sharing insights into their daily lives and spiritual practices.

Soaking Up the Sun: The Unexpected Stairs

As we ascended a seemingly endless staircase, a plot twist awaited us. Fatigue set in, but we regrouped, pushing forward. But, the camaraderie among coworkers transformed the hike.

We swapped stories, teased each other, and found solace in shared exhaustion as the forest trail welcomed us and cool breezes rejuvenated our spirits.

Finally, we reached Deurali, a resting point for those bound for Bishnudwar and Shivapuri peaks. As the sun blazed, we sprawled out on the ground at Deurali, recharging like solar panels. The downhill journey tested our knees, but our spirits kept us going. Back at the starting point, we hopped back on our motorcycles, craving the ultimate Nepali comfort food: Dal Bhat.

Reflecting on Nagi Gumba’s Enchantment

Our adventure was more than a hike — it was a day of shared laughter, unexpected encounters, and the joy of exploration.

Nagi Gumba has etched its beauty into our memories, reminding us that every twist in the trail brings its own magic.

So, the next time you lace up your shoes and set out, remember that every trail holds its own enchanting tale to tell; and it sits waiting for the next person willing to take the journey.
